August Newsletter

Hello neighbors,

We are on our summer break and don’t have a meeting scheduled this month. That said, we still have a number of wonderful things happening in Harsimus Cove in the coming weeks that I want to let you know about.

I hope that you will join us at our next General Meeting on Monday, September 11, at 7:30 PM at Grace Church. Save the date on your calendar and bring a friend! The more aware you are of what is happening in the community, the more you can help make it an even better place to live.

Getting off the soapbox now. :-) I’d like to draw your attention to some upcoming HCA events and share some good news from a couple of neighborhood groups.

First up, the HCA Social Committee, in partnership with the residents of the Laurel Court and Saddlewood Block Association, has been working hard to set up a neighborhood summer BBQ. It will be on Saturday August 26, in the enclave located on 2nd Street between Manila Avenue and Marin Boulevard.  Please drop by and bring a salad or dessert to share. Look for posters over the next few weeks with more details.

Next, as you may already know, the Jersey City Mayoral and City Council elections are scheduled for this November. The Downtown Coalition of Neighborhood Associations (DCNA) will be hosting two debates at Frank R. Conwell School (111 Bright Street):

  • Ward E Council Debate on October 16 at 7 PM
  • Mayoral Debate on October 18 at 7 PM

If you would like to submit a question to the candidates for either debate, please email us at harsimuscoveassociation@gmail.com.

Our first-ever Neighborhood Stoop Sale in May was a success (despite the rainy weekend) and proved a lovely way to meet neighbors—and recycle some gently used belongings. The HCA donated part of the proceeds from the Stoop Sale to the CWS Jersey City Immigration and Refugee Office. We just received a thank you from CWS and I’d like to personally thank Jason Chan and his team for organizing the event, and to all of you who participated in it. We plan to do this again in 2018.

The Embankment Preservation Coalition (EPC) has good news to share! Maureen Crowley and her team have been working on this project for over 19 years. At our meeting in September, Maureen will give us an update on the recommendation made by the New Jersey State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) on July 14 and the EPC’s next steps.

On the Jersey City Revaluation front, there will be a special session on the tax reval at City Hall Council Chambers (280 Grove Street) on August 16 at 7 PM for residents who live in buildings that are in various points of their tax abatement and may therefore see effects from the reval. Representatives from the reval company as well as the City will be present to answer your tax reval questions.

And finally, I know it’s only August, but it’s never too early to start thinking about…the Holidays! The DCNA will be hosting its annual Holiday Party on December 9 at Barrow Mansion. Save the date and stay tuned for details later in the year.

The summer so far has been as been lovely (weather-wise) and I hope you have a chance to take a break and enjoy some RnR with your friends and family.

That’s all for now,

Rachel Dsilva,
HCA President
