Composting in Jersey City!

We’re calling all residents to start composting today! By recycling your food scraps and other organic materials, you have the power to:

  • reduce greenhouse gases
  • limit the need for landfills
  • improve the health of our soil, positively impacting food nutrients and growth
  • support local, green infrastructure projects

Residents have 3 options to choose from:

1. Compost Pick Up Service

Community Compost Company collects food scraps and leftovers directly from your doorstep. You’ll receive a 5-gallon airtight bucket to fill with all acceptable materials and CCC will swap it out for a clean one weekly or bi-weekly. The cost is $29/month for weekly pick up and $19/month for bi-weekly pick up.

2. Food Scrap Drop Off

Bring your food scraps to a participating Community Garden for composting.

  • Mandela Lot Community Garden – 447 MLK Jr. Drive, Fridays, 7am-10am (starting May 31st)
  • Brunswick Community Garden – 174-176 Brunswick Street, Saturdays, 8am-1pm (Starting June 1st)
  • Riverview Farmers’ Market – Palisade Ave. between Bowers Street & Griffith Street, Sundays, 11am-2:30pm (May 5th – November 24th)

Check out what materials you’re able to compost by clicking here.

3. Backyard Composting

The City launched its Backyard Composting Pilot this July, encouraging and supporting residents to start recycling food scraps right in their backyards. Resources include discounted/free compost bins and composting 101 workshops.
